When an artistic vegan and her longtime love decided to finally tie the knot after a decade together, the result was a vegan wedding filled with colour, joy and some pretty incredible grub!
Kat and Joel’s special day took place on Wolfe Island, the largest of the Thousand Islands located near Kingston, ON. Captured by Josie Photo, the day’s festivities began with a memorable first look between the bride and groom, setting the tone for the joyous celebration ahead. The couple and their wedding party then boarded a transformed Winnebago for an epic ferry ride filled with laughter and anticipation. Guests were also ferried across Lake Ontario’s shimmering waters to the ceremony.
The ceremony
For Kat and Joel, nature was not just a backdrop but an essential element of their vegan wedding. Their ceremony, held lakeside, allowed Lake Ontario to bear witness to their vows of love and commitment. But there were some fun, revved-up details as well, with the couple arriving at the ceremony in Joel’s vintage convertible before walking down the aisle together, hand in hand.
The bride, adorned in a custom-made wedding dress by the talented Maureen of Abigail of Gardenia, exuded elegance and grace. A whimsical cape adorned with vibrant flowers added a pop of colour to her ensemble, perfectly complementing the citrus fruit accents that adorned the venue. Meanwhile, the groom and his groomsmen looked dapper in light blue suits with floral bow ties and cork suspenders.
As guests gathered under a grand tent for the reception, they were greeted with a sight straight out of a fairy tale. Long tables adorned with rustic yet elegant décor created a charming ambiance, while delicate floral arrangements in shades of pink and orange added a touch of whimsy to the setting. Each table featured unique hexagon table numbers to which their wedding coordinator added butterfly stickers, tying in seamlessly with the nature-inspired theme.
Sustainable and vegan wedding details
One of the most remarkable aspects of Kat and Joel’s vegan wedding was their commitment to sustainability. From their choice of wedding favours (White Spruce seedlings for guests to plant at home), to natural bug spray to ensure guests’ comfort, every detail was thoughtfully curated to minimize their environmental impact.
Another main highlight of the evening was the cuisine. Kat and Joel treated their guests to an entirely plant-based menu curated by the talented chefs at Plant Matter Kitchen. From the abundant vegan wedding buffet featuring truffled mushroom bruschetta, sausage rolls, herb-crusted portobello steak with cashew goat cheese (those are just a few items….and yes, all vegan!) to the cherry-filled donuts and mini lemon meringue pies by Knifey Spooney, every dish celebrated flavour and innovation. The addition of a mobile gelato cart from Mio Gelato Kingston provided the perfect sweet ending to an unforgettable day.
As the night came to a close, and the stars illuminated the sky, rain began to fall, allowing Kat and Joel to dance under the raindrops and twinkling lights, the perfect ending to their day because Kat absolutely loves the rain. Their wedding was not just a celebration of their love but also a testament to their shared values of sustainability, kindness, and joy. As they looked into each other’s eyes, they knew that their journey together was just beginning, filled with endless adventures and boundless love.
